Hi — thanks for the details. Please try these quick steps and tell me what happens:
- Clear cache (safe first step)
- Open Edge → go to
edge://settings/clearBrowserData
- Time range: All time
- Check at least: “Cached images and files.” (If you’re OK signing back in to sites, you can also check “Cookies and other site data.”)
- Click Clear now, then restart Edge.
- Disable extensions (to rule out conflicts)
- Open edge://extensions
- Toggle all extensions off, then restart Edge and test the highlighter.
- If it works, enable extensions one-by-one to find the culprit.
- Quick isolation tests
- Try InPrivate mode: Ctrl+Shift+N → test highlighting (this disables extensions by default).
- Try a new profile: edge://settings/profiles → Add profile → test there.
- Test both a regular webpage and a PDF (or scanned PDF) so we know which content type is affected.
- Other useful checks
- Update Edge:
edge://settings/help
→ let it update and restart. - Toggle hardware acceleration off to test:
edge://settings/system
→ Use hardware acceleration when available = Off → Restart. - If you’re annotating PDFs that are scanned images, use the Draw tool (pen) or run OCR — text highlighter only works on selectable text.
If Issue Persists, Please Share:
- Is the issue on PDFs, webpages, or both?
- Edge version (
edge://settings/help
) - Windows version (
winver
) - Screenshot or short video showing the toolbar and the problem (if possible)
Anything else you’d like me to include in the steps, or should I prepare one-click instructions (e.g., a printable checklist or exact clicks/screenshots)?
