I use my phone for personal as well as with my organization. I have outlook set up with my organization email - enforced with InTune. Phone won't allow install of Excel and Word - only "Office". I can use Office to open files on OneDrive and to create new files. I can open links on Teams. I cannot open attachments in Outlook. The claim is that my organization does not allow. The "explore Microsoft apps" in Outlook settings is similarly blocked. Other Android users in the organization do not have this problem. Appreciate any help.

    Hello DougHepworth,

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community and posting your concern here.

We totally understand that you can't install some individual office apps and missing some of it's features. We're sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you. However, we'd like to inform you that the Surface Duo launch required investment in our apps to ensure they could fully utilize the benefits of the dual-screen form factor. As we explored how best to do this for the Office experiences, we decided to focus our investment for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint exclusively in the Office mobile app. The Office app was designed to include the full Word, Excel, and PowerPoint mobile experiences, additional capabilities including the various PDF and Lens features, and an integrated experience that means fewer apps to use and requires far less storage on the device.

As for the attachment, may we know what file type it is? Is the file integrated with one of these individual Office apps?

Feel free to respond on this thread to keep us posted.

The necessary file types that don't open are .xlsx and .docx. Pdfs work.

I was pushing for the organization to adopt the Surface Duo as a preferred device in anticipation of the release of the 2. Now the only discussion is that the only device that cannot handle Microsoft Office files is the Microsoft device. It never dawned on me that this would be possible. It is an embarrassment to me. It really should be an embarrassment to Microsoft.

All Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) open properly for me, including opening them from the Outlook, Duo internal storage, network shares, One Drive, and my company Teams portal. Are you using a company email account for Outlook? If so your company may indeed be blocking opening certain attachments types from emails. Have you tried a personal email account in Outlook? Who makes the "claim' to which you refer? What does your corporate IT say? Is this a company provided business Phone?

This is a personal device that is allowed to access organization resources through InTune. The IT department tried to replicate the issue on various IOS and Android devices. They were unable; attachments behaved as expected on all other devices. There is history of similar problems on Samsung phones several years ago, so the problem may be with Android 10.
