Wireless Android Auto, Surface Duo 2, Car Connection Issues

I have a new BMW that has Android Auto wireless only and the Duo 2 just will not connect. It connects to Bluetooth so calls etc. are fine but I can't connect to Android Auto at all. I thought it was a car issue initially but I've tried a Samsung phone and that connected no problem. I think it might have something to do with connecting to a WiFi network that doesn't have Internet but I also don't receive the same setup messages I get on the Samsung. The phone keeps disconnecting from the no Internet WiFi and I can't seem to force it to connect. It could be something else entirely though, I'm no expert! I would just like Android Auto to work as it should, it's an expensive phone and I feel this should work seamlessly.

If anyone has solved this it would be much appreciated! The Duo 2 is fully updated and I can't see anything obvious that's disabled.

    Hello PeteMish!

Wireless Android auto does use a Wi-Fi direct connection in order to present its screen to your car audio deck. It connects first to Bluetooth and then negotiates a Wi-Fi direct connection, and once complete, displays as expected.

This negotiation can fail or be impaired due several factors.

    • wi-fi congested area
    • applications on the device that may control or interfere with the Wi-Fi connection

Please connect your device directly to your audio deck and verify a over the wire Android Auto works as expected.

Then, if it does, put your device into safe mode and try the wireless connection

    Instructions to enter safe mode:

Press and hold the power button until the "Power menu" appears

Press and hold on the "Restart" and a pop-up should appear to reboot to safe mode.

Press 'OK' and your device will reboot into safe mode.

You can verify you are in safe mode by seeing the "Safe mode" watermark in the lower-left of the screen.

In order to get back into normal boot mode, simply restart the device by either clicking 'Restart' in the power menu or by shutting down and rebooting.

Once in Safe mode, retry the connection.

Let me know what your results are.

    Thanks,

Thank you very much I'll give this a try. I can't test a wired connection on this car because it is wireless only Android Auto but I know SD2 works fine on my phone when using wired Android Auto with a different car. Then I also know my current car worked with wireless Android Auto with a different phone.

Unfortunately, this didn't work. I tried Safe mode, but the phone will still only connect to Bluetooth and not Android Auto, despite the phone saying that 'Android Auto is available'. When I set up with the Samsung it's really smooth and straightforward, but it just doesn't seem to connect with the Surface Duo 2.
