Microsoft Surface Slim Pen 2 disconnecting frequently in OneNote

I find that whenever I use my pen with the Surface Duo it has some specific apps where it will randomly disconnect during use. OneNote is the most irritating example, where it will randomly disconnect and become unusable for anywhere between 3-10 seconds. It always disconnects if I move it barely 30cm away from the device and will take a while to connect again. Is there any way I can solve this issue?

    I tried to duplicate. Occasionally it did not make an immediate connection. However, it did connect within a few seconds.

    When this happens does OneNote switch out of Pen Input mode?

    It disconnects entirely, I can't even use it on the other screen when it happens.

    Please look at indicator on OneNote to see if it is switching out of Pen Input Mode, the pen icon upper right. Do you have "Ink mode on stylus hover" turned on?

    It's not changing out of Pen Input Mode, the icon stays the same throughout when it works and disconnects. I've tried Ink Mode on Stylus hover turned on and off, and get the same results both ways.
