Surface Book 3 BSOD

I've recently bought Surface Book 3, i7, 32GB. Now running Windows 10 Pro 20H2 19042.985

I'm mostly using it with Surface Dock 2, with external monitor plugged in to it, tablet part flipped to face away from the keyboard (main feature, why I bought it).

It often crashes with BSOD, mostly when using Skype or sometimes Teams for video calls. BlueScreenView shows ntoskrnl.exe as crash cause. Sometimes there is other services together with it, but ntoskenl.exe is always there. Also seems like it's overheating, sometimes thermometer is shown after crash or when wanting to boot right after. Temperature monitor also shows it reaching 100 deg often, even if not under high load.

So far I've:

  • ran sfc /scannow
  • ran Windows Memory Diagnostics
  • Enabled battery limit to 50% in the BIOS
  • Freshly reinstalled Windows
  • Ran Windows Updates
  • Ran Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

None seems to solve the issue.

I've also noticed that it's not overheating when on battery.

    Hi TadasNatavaleikalas,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry. We appreciate the effort in performing the initial troubleshooting steps.

Here are the methods that we suggest:

    • Run the System File Checker. Disregard that sfc scan since it had been performed.
    • Check if app is affected by an antivirus installed on your device.
    • Install drivers package. Check the specific OS build of your Windows Settings > System > About. Download the driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Book 3 and click download on the next page. Please choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. After the download, run and install the .msi then Restart the Surface Device.

When you say you have installed a fresh windows, did you perform the USB recovery image?
