SSD damaged after Windows 10 update

About three days ago, as usual after a few days when I finished my day job, I got into the habit of updating Windows 10 on my Surface Book 3, which I bought it about two months ago as soon as Microsoft launched it on the market. After updating Windows, my Surface crashes at startup. I waited about 3 minutes and didn't see the Windows screen as normal (the dark screen only saw the cursor of the mouse), so I turned off the Surface by pressing the power button and holding it for a few seconds to turn it off completely.

I then turned on my Surface and entered the password to enter Windows, when I discovered my Samsung T7 SSD (it connetced to the Surface thru USB-C port) was broken. Windows saw drive E: but understood that it was not formatted. I ran Disk Management program of Windows 10 and found that this SSD was still assigned as drive E: Healthy (Primary Partition) with 1863.01 GB RAW.

Please note, my Samsung T7 SSD just purchased more than 2 months ago.

I tried uninstalling the recently Windows updated versions, restoring Windows to a good time at about month before, and even fully updating the existing Windows updates, all cases said my SSD was not formatted.

Currently, after a full update of Windows updates, the Surface sometimes fails to start Windows and then it hangs with a dark screen and only the mouse cursor on the screen. It seems that the SSD that Microsoft pre-installed it on my Surface Book 3 has also been damaged.

Perhaps Windows updates damaged the BIOS of my Samsung T7 SSD?

Please help me how to retrieve or recover data in my Samsung T7 SSD. It's very important to me.

Allow me to get the latest updates: Currently I cannot access the folders in the C: drive of the Surface, for example: "Downloads", ... because when click on Downloads folder in File Explorer in Windows then Windows will hang all the time until pressing down the power button!

Thank you very much!

    Hi VietHuynh3,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community.

For the C: drive of the Surface Book 3, please run these steps to troubleshoot the issue and check you will then be able to access the files on the C: drive:

    1: Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

    2: Update drivers and firmware

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going to Settings > System > About.

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Book 3 then click Download on the next page.

Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.

After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

3: Run System File Checker Tool in Windows 10

For the external SSD drive (Samsung T7 SSD) that you have, Have you tried disconnecting it while the device is off then plug it back in by the time the Surface Book 3 is on?

    Hi,

I had similar issue with my Surface Pro 4.  You had a newer machine. Last week, I updated my Surface Pro 4 to Windows 2004 after the block was removed. It installed successfully but broke the sound card driver. So, I decided to  move back to previous update at which never completed and damaged the SSD. I tried all the possible solutions including boot up from USB and using data eraser to detect the SSD but no, it is gone and I do not think I will be able to extract the data too. Microsoft needs to be doing better than.

    Hi Marrion,

    Thanks for your help!

For the C: drive: it was solved after running System File Checker Tool in Windows 10.

For the external Samsung T7 SSD  drive:

<1> I tried to disconnecting it while the device is off then plug it back in by the time the Surface Book 3 is on many times.

<2> I tried to uninstalling the Windows updates.

<3> I tried to restoring back to one previous point of Windows 10.

<4> I tried to plugging the SSD drive to other Windows PCs with Windows 10 OS.

<5> I tried to plugging the SSD drive to Mac Book Pro with Mac OS. (I hoped Windows Updates just damaged the SSD's BIOS related to Windows OS.)

<6> I tried to using MiniTool Power Data Recovery software with Personal Ultimate Lifetime Usage license.

All of the above trials have failed!

This morning, I have an appointment with BEST BUY to recover my data in the SSD. I hope they can help me! I will update information after working with them.

Please help me if someones are any ideas. My data is very important to me.

    Thank you very much!

    Hi Procashjs,

    Thanks for your reply!

My data is very important to me. Microsoft has lost faith in me. I think they will and forever owe me and my family an apology!

    Best regards,
