Surface Book 3 Won't Charge Through Base and Won't Use Battery 2

Hi, I have a issue regarding my Surface Book 3. It currently won't charge through the base and won't use battery 2. When it is attached to the base, it detects battery 2 and can show the percentage of battery 2, but never displays battery 2 as "in use", instead, it rapidly drains from battery 1, which is the only one shown as "in use". If I connect charger to the base, battery 2 can be charged (and the system can display the charging status), but battery 1 stays "in use" and does not get charged at all. If I detach the Surface and connect it directly to charger, then the battery 1 gets charged correctly.

While I can attach it to the base, use for about 1 hour or so, and then detach and charge, this is quite an inconvenience.

I feel weird that it can detect battery 2, report percentage from battery 2, and show the charge status of battery 2, but simply cannot use it and cannot charge battery 1 through it. What should I do to fix this? Thanks.

    Hi DY1_60607,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry.

We suggest the methods below to troubleshoot the battery issue:

    - Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows Update.

    • Check power settings. Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settingsChange plan settingsChange advanced power settings> expand Battery
    • Run the system file check in Windows 10.
    • Install the drivers package. Download the driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Book 3 and click download on the next page. Please choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. After the download, runand installthe .msi then Restart the Surface Device.

I tried these but the problem is still there. Currently the Surface Book 3 is attached to the dock and I see the following, so Battery 2 is just sitting there and Battery 1 is being drained. Thanks.

Thank you for providing t he details, DY1_60607. Does the issue persists when connected to a dock only or it also happens when the charger is connected direct to the device?

Hi, when the charger is directly connected to the device (the display part), battery 1 can be charged without problem. Also, now the situation changed a little: when I connect the device to the base, it shows battery 2 "in use" too (previously it only shows battery 2's percentage, but does not show it as "in use"), but battery 1 still discharges at a rapid rate and battery 2 seems not to go down at all. And when I connect charger to base, battery 1 still does not seem to get charged. Thanks.

One other thing that I noticed is that now the base keyboard is always lit up when the device is attached to the base. I don't think this was the case before, thanks.
