USB 3.1 controller on Surface Book 3 downgraded to USB 2.0 Windows 11

Hello.

I'm a happy owner of Surface Book 3, a great little machine.

But suddenly my USB 3.1 controller started to behave like USB 2.0. In Bluetooth and devices all my external SSDs say that this device could run faster in connected to USB 3 port. In AIDA64 in USB controllers there is Surface USB Hub in USB devices and it says that USB 3.0 device is connected to USB 2.0 port..

I tried to delete usb controllers in device manager, reinstalled Surface Drivers and Firmware to latest, removed it and reinstalled again, then reset my Surface to default hence reinstalled Windows 11 from scratch and then again installed Surface Drivers and Firmware, nothing helps. So my external SSDs Samsung T7 and HP goes only for 40 MBps instead of 1 GBps as it was before.

I have no idea what to do, please advise.

Thanks advance for your help.

    Hi akryuchkov,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue with your Surface Book 3. You've already done a thorough job of troubleshooting, but let's try a couple more things:

Check Power Settings: Sometimes, power settings can throttle USB ports, especially in devices like external SSDs. Go to Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > right-click on each USB Root Hub > Properties > Power Management tab, and make sure "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked for each one. Then, restart your Surface. You might want to check if the issue is hardware-related. Even though you’ve reset and reinstalled everything, there could be an underlying hardware failure with the USB controller or ports themselves. You might want to reach out to Microsoft support to check if there’s an underlying hardware issue. Contact Us - Microsoft Support
