Microsoft Edge appeared on my windows 8.1 screen. when suddenly a page being displayed would not close. Why did this happen? I did not feel it was a safe browser after that incident. Can someone give an explanation, and reassure me about the safety of Microsoft Edge?

    Hi HelenRamsey,

My name is Carl and I am an independent Windows 10 advisor.

There could be numerous reasons for a browser to stop functioning, some, but not all, are listed below:

    Code Errors

The website has been poorly coded or there are coding errors that the browser can't handle. The website might have been developed for older browsers where by the internet standards have changed.

    Addins

Third party addins are causing issues with the application.

Browsers not kept up to date

This is the biggest cause of crashes. Ensure you periodically update your browser. If you're using Microsoft Edge this can be done by:

    1. Click the '...' in the top right hand corner
    2. Click 'Help and Feedback' then click 'About Microsoft Edge' it should then try and check to see if there is an update. If there is an update it will be downloaded and installed and then ask to be restarted by pressing the 'Restart' button.

    Hope this hepls.

    Kind regards,

    Carl.

Thanks for your response. I'll take your advice, as I'm learning about Microsoft Edge. I hate change, but I'll get used to it eventually.
