Why is Microsoft Edge opening a separate page when I click on an embedded link within an open page?

I've seen this issue for a couple of months and I can't find a setting that corresponds with anything like what I described. I've performed the typical cleanup processes and it continues. This is so aggravating. I will consider going over to chrome without a fix..

Thanks in advance for you help. This does not happen on all web sites, just some.

    Open Edge then visit www.bing.com

    Copy and paste the following into the Bing search bar

    edge opens new tab on every link

    Press Enter

    After that, you will see a switch "Open links in new tab"

    Toggle it off

    You may restart Edge browser if it helps
