Why does edge disable 1Password over and over again

Edge is trying out its own password facility and is elbowing 1Password out of its way. Please stop. The community has built up years of trust with 1Password not edge. So hands off my 1Password settings!

First, I want to assure you that Microsoft Edge was never designed to intentionally exclude or disable third-party password managers like 1Password. The issue you’re experiencing with the extension being repeatedly disabled is typically not intentional, but more likely due to the following technical reasons:

    Security protection mechanisms: Edge (and all Chromium-based browsers) has a built-in security feature that regularly scans all installed extensions to ensure they have not been tampered with or damaged. In some cases, after the browser or extension is updated, this scanning process may make a false positive, temporarily disabling the extension to protect your security.

    Functional conflicts: When the browser's built-in password management feature and the 1Password extension are both active, they may conflict over which one should fill in passwords. For example, both may attempt to save or fill passwords in the same login field, which may cause the browser to disable one of them to avoid instability.

    Profile corruption: In rare cases, certain settings in your Edge user profile may be corrupted, preventing it from correctly remembering your extension enablement status.

    Here are some troubleshooting solutions:

    1. Adjust Edge's built-in password settings

    This is the most direct and effective way to resolve functionality conflicts. You can tell Edge: “Step back and let 1Password handle the passwords.”

    Open the Edge browser, click the three dots (...) in the top-right corner, and select “Settings.”

    In the left-hand menu, click “Profiles.”

    In the main window, select “Passwords.”

    Here, disable the following two options:

    “Offer to save passwords”

    “Automatic sign-in”

    After making these settings, Edge's built-in password manager will no longer intervene proactively, thereby eliminating the primary source of conflict with 1Password.

     

    1. Reset the extension and check permissions

    Enter edge://extensions in the Edge address bar and press Enter.

    Locate 1Password, click “Remove” to uninstall it.

    Restart the Edge browser.

    Go to the Microsoft Edge Add-ons Store, search again, and reinstall the official 1Password extension.

    After installation, please ensure that all necessary permissions are granted.
