When you mentioned that you have a "shared Microsoft 365 account," do you mean that you and your son each have separate Microsoft accounts and have joined the same Microsoft family group to share a Microsoft 365 Family subscription? Please feel free to correct me if my understanding is wrong.
I would like to explain:
Typically, child accounts require parental consent.
Although your son is an adult, his Microsoft account might have an incorrect birth date set, causing Microsoft to still treat his account as a child account.
You can try to let your son change the birth date of his account.
- Log in with your son's account on this website: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2189464
- Select "I’m a parent or guardian" or "I need to ask parent or guardian" and log in with your account to provide consent for your son's account.
- Change the birth date and save it.
