I was trying to get through to Microsoft Support for hours with no luck — automated messages and long hold times.

Out of frustration, I searched online and found someone who recommended calling this direct number:

PII removed

Surprisingly, I actually got help there, and my issue with my  login was resolved quickly.

Not sure if it's official or third-party, but it worked for me.

    Hi @Eric

Good day to you, and welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

I'm glad to hear you've regained access to your account. Sometimes, Microsoft service number might be overloaded, this results in difficulty to reach our support. However, please note that the phone number you mentioned is not affiliated with Microsoft, even when support from the phone number can help you get access to your account. For your safety, avoid contacting any support numbers that are not officially listed by Microsoft, as doing so could put your identity and account at risk. For phone numbers that are not from Microsoft, please always verify its reputation, and reliability with well-known reverse phone number look up apps and websites.

If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to reach out. We're here to help and look forward to assisting you further.
