Hello,

We recently received a message about a new Teams Reader role being available for the Teams Admin Centre - this was meant to have rolled out by June 2025 but as of early August 2025 this is still not available for us.

Can you advise why please?

See below the message ID (I cannot also see a corresponding Roadmap item for this either to check if this has been delayed).

We’re excited to announce the rollout of a new built-in role-based access control (RBAC) role in the Microsoft Teams admin center called Teams Reader. This role is designed to provide read-only access across all* pages in the Teams admin center, enabling secure visibility without the risk of unintended changes.

[When this will happen:] General Availability (Worldwide, GCC): We will begin rolling out early June 2025 and expect to complete by late June 2025.

General Availability (GCC High, DoD): We will begin rolling out early July 2025 and expect to complete by late July 2025.

    Good day @Mcintosh, Rebecca

    Welcome to Q&A forum!

Thank you for the detailed information.

I also couldn't find the “Teams Reader” role in the Microsoft Admin Center, but after searching for more information, I found that this role can be assigned from the Microsoft Entra Admin Center.

Based on this article About admin roles in the Microsoft 365 admin center - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn, it mentioned that the Microsoft 365 admin center lets you manage Microsoft Entra roles and Microsoft Intune roles. However, these roles are a subset of the roles available in the Microsoft Entra admin center and the Intune admin center. This might explain why you couldn’t see the Teams Reader role in the Microsoft Admin Center.

You can assign this role by following my guidance:

    • Go to Microsoft Entra admin center
    • Choose "Roles & admin" in the left panel.
    • Click on "All roles"
    • Type "Teams Reader" in the search bar and "Enter"
    • Click on this role and select "Add Assignments"

    • Scroll down and select "No members seleted" User's image
    • Click on users that you want to assign this role and click "select" User's image
    • Click "Next" -> "Settings" -> "Active" User's image
    • "Enter Justification"* and click "Assign".

    Note:

-To assign the Teams Reader role in the Microsoft Entra Admin Center, you need to have one of the following roles yourself: Global Administrator/Privileged Role Administrator/Role Management Administrator.

    - The Teams Reader role is a read-only role in the Microsoft Teams Admin Center. It allows users to view all settings and configurations in Teams without being able to make any changes.

    - If a user has multiple roles, the most permissive role usually takes effect. So if they have both Teams Administrator and Teams Reader, the Teams Administrator role will override the read-only restrictions.

Besides, you can also review this Message ID information again by following these steps in Microsoft Admin Center (Microsoft Admin Center -> Health -> Message Center -> Type "MC1085581" in the search bar)
