Hi everyone,
Thanks for sharing your experiences, it’s clear this microphone issue in breakout rooms is affecting quite a few users across different setups. I’ve seen reports from both desktop and web users, mainly on Windows, and it seems to happen consistently inside breakout rooms, while everything works fine in the main meeting. This looks like a recent issue, possibly tied to a Teams update. It’s not limited to one organization or device type, which suggests it may need investigation from the backend side.
While we wait for more clarity, here are a few things that have helped some users:
- Minimize and maximize the Teams window once inside the breakout room this may refresh the UI and bring the mic button back.
- Leave and rejoin the breakout room.
- Use Teams Web App via https://teams.microsoft.com in Edge or Chrome.
- Check breakout room settings: If you’re the organizer, make sure “Participants can unmute themselves” is enabled.
- Verify mic permissions in Teams settings: Go to Settings > Devices and confirm the correct mic is selected.
I’re escalating this issue internally so the engineering team can take a closer look. If you’re an IT admin, I recommend submitting a support ticket via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and checking the Service Health Dashboard for updates.

I'm truly appreciate your patience and detailed feedback. Your reports are helping us better understand the scope and urgency of this issue. Please continue to share any new findings, and we’ll keep you updated as soon as we have more information from the backend investigation.
