Teams App crash when starting a meeting on Teams but work fine on Web

When I start or join any meeting in the new Teams, the app crashes. Messaging works fine, but as soon as a meeting begins, it closes.

System details:

  • Laptop: Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 12

Windows Edition: Windows 11 Pro

Version: 24H2

Installed on: ‎01/02/2025

OS build: 26100.4770

Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.197.0

Troubleshooting done so far:

Verified there’s no Teams data in LocalAppData or RoamingAppData (since this is the new Teams).

  • Uninstalled Teams, deleted all Teams related folders from LocalAppData%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe , %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Teams, LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Teams, AppData%\Microsoft\Teams
  • Removed registry entries from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Teams HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Teams
  • Remove leftover using powershell Get-AppxPackage MSTeams | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
  • Restarted and reinstall the Teams, still crashing.
  • If I disable the Intel SST (Smart Sound Technology) microphone, Teams works fine (but obviously without microphone functionality).

Installed the latest Intel SST driver from Lenovo, but the issue persists.

Generic Microsoft audio driver is not an option, as the microphone is built-in and tied to Intel SST.

Has anyone found a fix for this?

    Hi @Irtiza A
Thank you for your patience while we investigated the Teams crash issue you reported.

This could be a compatibility issue between the Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) audio driver and the Windows 11 audio subsystem. This triggers a fault in the Windows audio engine (AudioSes.dll), causing Teams to close unexpectedly.

    Key points:

    • The issue is specific to the Teams desktop client on affected hardware/OS combinations.
    • Teams Web (browser version) works normally, and the crash is not related to Teams chat or file features.
    • Disabling the Intel SST audio device prevents the crash but removes microphone functionality, confirming the driver as the cause.

There are some workarounds you can try:

    1. Use Teams Web in Browser for meetings. This avoids the crash entirely.
    2. Connect a USB audio device (headset or speakerphone). USB audio bypasses the Intel SST driver and restores full audio functionality. Note: A 3.5mm analog headset will not resolve the issue as it still uses the SST driver path.
    3. Regularly check Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo Support for updated audio drivers. Lenovo and Intel are actively working on fixes for this issue.

I recommend applying these workarounds to maintain meeting functionality while awaiting the official driver update.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I appreciate your understanding as we work with our partners to resolve this.

    Hi @Irtiza A
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. To better assistance, could you please confirm detail below:

    • Does the crash happen every time you start or join a meeting?
    • Are you using any external devices (headset, webcam)?
    • Is a VPN active when the crash occurs?
    • Have you tried lowering your monitor’s refresh rate to 60Hz?

In the meantime, I recommend some steps below:

    1. Lower Monitor Refresh Rate
If you're using a high refresh rate monitor (e.g., 120Hz or 144Hz), try lowering it to 60Hz via Display Settings. This has helped others avoid similar crashes.
    2. Disable VPN Temporarily
If you're using a VPN (like Private Internet Access), try disabling it before starting a meeting. Some VPNs interfere with Teams' audio/video initialization.
    3. Check Event Viewer Logs
      • Open Windows Event Viewer by Pressing Windows Key + S to open the search bar. Type:eventvwr
      • Click on the result that says Event Viewer (it may show as “View event logs”).
      • In the left panel, expand Windows Logs.
      • Click on Application.
      • Look for any Error entries that occurred at the time Teams crashed.
      • Double-click an error to see details. Look for faulting modules like: AudioSes.dll , MMDevAPI.dll, anything related to Intel SST

Note: Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Your detailed response will help us diagnose and investigate the issue more efficiently. If I misunderstood what you’re looking for, feel free to let me know or share a screenshot. I’d be happy to help further!

Thank you for your cooperation. I'm looking forward for your reply.

Try to disable all Enhancements or Sound effects for your microphone.

    Hi @Irtiza A
Thank you for update. Based on you provided, I suggest some step below you can try:

    1. Use a different microphone
      • Try using a USB headset or external microphone. This avoids using the Intel SST driver.
    2. Repair the Teams App
Go to:Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced Options Untitled Click Repair to fix any corrupted components. User's image
    3. Check WebView2 Installation
      • Make sure WebView2 is installed and not blocked by antivirus or security tools. Teams depends on it to run properly.
