Unable to edit Word doc on iPad even though I am already signed in

I have a “Home” account. I am already signed in. But when I open a Word doc on the iPad, it asks me to sign in, or pay for a new plan. This is something new. And most frustrating.

    What do you mean by "Home Account" here?
    Do you mean you have an Office 365 Subscription? Either a Personal or a Family subscription?

    Please note that editing is only available on screens up to 10.1 inches. If you're using an iPad with a screen size of around 12.9 inches or above, you'll need to subscribe to a Microsoft Office 365 plan.
