Two Versions of a Copied OneNote Notebook Were Created and Not Syncing

I had created a copied OneNote Notebook for our team to use as a Sandbox environment, but somehow it created two versions of the sandbox notebook and neither of the versions are updating with each other. Is there a way to fix this?

    Hi @Liz

Good day to you! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for getting in touch about the duplicated OneNote Sandbox notebooks. I totally get how important it is to have one reliable space for your team to work together smoothly, and I’m here to help you get this sorted out.

From what you've described, it sounds like two separate versions of the Sandbox notebook were created, and they are not syncing with each other. This typically happens when a notebook is copied manually or saved in different locations (e.g., OneDrive vs local storage), causing OneNote to treat them as distinct notebooks.

    Here’s what I recommend as a workaround:

    1/ Identify the primary notebook
Open both versions and determine which one contains the most accurate or up-to-date content. This will be the version you want to keep and share with your team.

    2/ Merge content (if needed)
If both notebooks contain unique content, you can manually copy sections or pages from one to the other:

    • Right-click on a section or page.
    • Select Move or Copy.
    • Choose the destination notebook.

    3/ Remove the duplicate notebook
Once you’ve consolidated the content, delete the outdated or unused version to avoid confusion. If it’s stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, you can delete it from there to ensure it’s no longer accessible to others.

    4/ Share the correct Notebook
Use the Share feature in OneNote to send the correct notebook link to your team. This ensures everyone is working from the same cloud-synced version.

    5/ Check sync status
Ask your team members to verify that their OneNote is syncing properly:

    • Go to File > Info > View Sync Status.
    • Click Sync Now or follow any prompts to resolve sync issues.

    User's image Notes:

For future sandbox environments, I recommend creating a new notebook directly in OneDrive or SharePoint and sharing it from there. This ensures all users are accessing the same cloud-based version and helps prevent duplication.
I hope this message finds you well and if there’s anything else I can help with, just let me know. I’m happy to help.

    Wishing you a great day.
