Autocorrect words in Teams or browsers for common errors like the word "the" when typed teh etc.

Teams has spellchecker but does not autocorrect even simple words like "the" when typed "teh". I have turned on autocorrect in Windows. Also, would like to be able to add in my own commonly misspelled words to be autocorrected like I can in Outlook.

    Hi @Lisa Stevens,

Thank you for your detailed response.

I'm sorry to say that currently, Microsoft Teams Desktop supports spellcheck (highlighting errors), but does not support autocorrect for common typos like “teh” > “the.” This limitation applies even if autocorrect is enabled in Windows settings.

Here are a few workaround steps you can try to improve your experience:

    1. Verify Spellcheck Is Enabled in Teams Desktop
    • Open Teams.
    • Go to Settings > General.
    • Scroll to Language and ensure “Enable spell check” is turned on.
    • Restart Teams to apply changes.
    1. Enable Autocorrect in Windows OS
    • Go to Start > Settings > Time & Language > Typing.
    • Turn on:

    Autocorrect misspelled words

    Highlight misspelled words

These settings apply to many apps, but not all, and unfortunately Teams Desktop doesn’t currently support autocorrect even with these enabled.

    1. Use Outlook or Word for Composing
    • If autocorrect is essential, you might consider drafting messages in Outlook or Word and then pasting them into Teams.

You can also submit feedback directly in Teams via Help > Give feedback to request autocorrect support in future updates.

Sorry again for the inconvenience this limitation may be causing.

If there's anything else I can help, please don't hesitate to reach out again. I'm here to help.

    Hi @Lisa Stevens,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Q&A Community. We're happy to help you with your concern.

To help troubleshoot and clarify the issue, could you please confirm the following:

    1. Which browser are you using to access Teams (e.g., Edge, Chrome, Firefox)?

Is it one of the latest three supported versions?

    1. Are you expecting Teams to automatically correct typos like “teh” to “the,” or just highlight them for manual correction?
    2. Are you using the Microsoft Editor browser extension? It can provide autocorrect and grammar suggestions in web-based apps.
    3. Are you using the Teams Web client or Teams Desktop app?

If using Desktop, does the issue persist there too?

Once we have this information, we can better determine whether the issue is related to Teams limitations, browser settings, or system-level autocorrect behavior.

Let me know and I’ll be happy to guide you through the next steps.
