Hi IFEANYI,
This is April, I'll be happy to assist you. Sorry to hear that you're having issue with your Windows computer login. Let me help you out.
Based on the description you provided, you need help to login to another computer on your network.
You need to make sure that the username and password you're entering match an existing account on the computer you're trying to access. Ensure also that the target computer allows incoming connections from your device.
Here's the guide to solve the issue:
- Verify the Correct Username
- Windows requires you to use the exact username and password of a valid account on the computer you're trying to access. This can be either a local user account or a Microsoft account.
- For a local user the format is usually: ComputerName\Username
- For a Microsoft account: user@example.com
- To check the correct username on the target computer:
- Go to the computer you want to access
- Press Win + R > type cmd > press Enter
- In the command prompt type: whoami
- This will display the active username in the format ComputerName\Username, which you should use when connecting from another device.
- Ensure the Password is not Blank
- Windows does not allow network logins for user accounts without a password by default.
- Set a password for the account (recommended) or
- Check the local security policy to allow blank passwords (not recommended)
- On the target computer > open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options
- If the account doesn't have a password, choose the option to add one
- Enable File and Network Sharing On the computer you're trying to access:
- Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings
- Make sure the following options are enabled:
- Network Discovery
- File and Printer Sharing
- Under All Network Section:
- Turn off password-protected sharing (only if you don't want to use a password)
- Leave it enabled, and make sure you're using the correct username and password to connect.
- Check Credentials Cache (on your computer)
- Windows might be using outdated or incorrect login credentials automatically
- Go to Control Panel > Credential Manager
- Under Windows Credentials, look for any saved entries related to the target computer and remove them
- Once removed, try connecting again. Windows should now prompt you to enter the correct username and password.
- Connect to the Remote Computer
- To access the remote system, open File Explorer or press Win + R, then enter one of the following: \ComputerName \ComputerIP
- You should be prompted to enter login credentials. Use one of these formats:
- ComputerName\Username
- Or simply Username (if both computers use same credentials)
- Enter the correct password, and if you prefer not to enter it every time, check the box that says "Remember my credentials".
If the issue continues, please don’t hesitate to contact us again. We’re here to help, and we appreciate your continued trust in us.
Warm Regards,
April P.
