MS Word worked fine until the recent update, but now it appears to be corrupted. How can I fix it?

    Hi,

May I ask if you received an error or message?
May I also ask the specific details on what was corrupted in your MS Word app?
May I ask if you have performed any solutions to fix the issue?

In the meantime, please try to repair your MS Word.

I look forward to your response.

    Stay Safe!

    Hi Rett Baumann,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work through the issue with Microsoft Word following the recent update.

To ensure I provide the most accurate support, could you kindly share:

    • What specific error messages (if any) are appearing?
    • Is the issue isolated to Word or affecting other Office apps as well?

Since you may have already attempted a repair of Microsoft Office, here are the next steps I recommend to fully resolve the problem:

Step 1: Run Word in Safe Mode

This disables add-ins that might be causing the issue.

    • Press Windows + R, type winword /safe, and press Enter
    • If Word works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins via File > Options > Add-ins

    Step 2: Reinstall Microsoft Office

This ensures a clean installation in case any files were missed or corrupted during the update.

    • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program
    • Select Microsoft Office, click Uninstall
    • Restart your computer
    • Reinstall Office from Reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office

Step 3: Run System File Checker

This checks for and repairs any corrupted Windows system files that may affect Office.

    • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
    • Type: sfc /scannow and press Enter
    • Restart your device to apply changes

Step 4: Create a New Windows User Profile

A corrupted user profile can cause persistent issues. Creating a new one helps isolate the problem.

-Go to Settings > Accounts > Other users

-Click Add account → choose Add a user without a Microsoft account

-Enter a username and password → click Next

-Sign out and log in to the new account then check Word again.

For more detailed instructions, please refer to the official Microsoft support page at:

Step 5: Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Repair Install)

This reinstalls Windows while keeping your files and apps intact. It can fix deeper system-level issues.

*Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides:

Please keep me posted on how it goes, and feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance. I’m here to help.
