Query on Teams

I have an M365 group, and the requirement is to make it dynamic. This group is associated with a Team that has several standard, private, and shared channels. Before proceeding with making it dynamic in Entra ID, I have the following queries:

  1. This M365 group is linked to a Team with multiple channels.
    • Will the membership of standard channels become dynamic?
    • Will owners still be able to modify membership directly from Teams?
    • Will the members of private and shared channels also become dynamic? (To my knowledge, only standard channel membership would be dynamic.)
    • Will owners still be able to edit the membership of private and shared channels?
  2. Once I make the group dynamic, will channel users (i.e., members or owners) still be able to hide channels?

    Hi @Glenn Maxwell

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Please find below the detailed responses to your questions:

Will the membership of standard channels become dynamic?  Yes. Standard channels inherit their membership from the parent M365 group. Once the group is made dynamic, the membership of standard channels will automatically reflect the rules defined in Entra ID.

Will owners still be able to modify membership directly from Teams?  No. After converting the group to dynamic, owners will no longer be able to manually add or remove members via the Teams interface. All membership changes must be managed through Entra ID or the Microsoft 365 admin center. Reference: Overview of dynamic membership for teams - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

Will the members of private and shared channels also become dynamic?  No. Private and shared channels maintain separate membership lists that are not linked to the parent M365 group. Their membership remains static and must be managed manually.

Will owners still be able to edit the membership of private and shared channels?  Yes. Owners retain the ability to manage membership of private and shared channels independently, as these are not governed by the dynamic rules of the parent group.

Once I make the group dynamic, will channel users (members or owners) still be able to hide channels?  Yes. The ability to hide channels is a user-specific preference and is not affected by dynamic group membership. Users can continue to show or hide channels as needed.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

    Looking forward to your response!
