How do I access 365 admin portal when admin has dissappeared?

I was recently hired to a small non profit. The previous director changed passwords to all of the tech and moved out of state. I have been able to recover the domains but the emails were set up directly through MS. I cannot get a hold of anyone at MS to help on the phone or online. I need to get access to this account. What can I do?

    Hi @Jennifer Lacy,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

I see that you’ve successfully recovered the domain. Next, please prepare the following information:

    1. Domain Ownership Verification: Confirm that you are the owner of the domain and provide supporting documentation.
    2. Details Related to the Previous Tenant:
      • Who was responsible for paying for the Microsoft service plans?
        • Any personal or account-related information you have from the previous tenant.

Once you’ve gathered this information, please follow these steps to contact Microsoft’s technical support:

Contact Microsoft Support by phone as described in Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn.

This is how telephone support can be reached. The reason for the call must be the term AdminCenter

The role must be specified as Global Administrator

In the description of the request, the term AdminCenter must be mentioned.

    Hi @Jennifer Lacy,

In case you are still unable to reach the technical support team via phone, you can follow the steps below to create a ticket for Microsoft’s technical support. Once you raise the ticket, a live agent will contact you directly.

    Steps to follow:

    1. Visit the Microsoft 365 Enterprise Plans page:   Go to Compare Office 365 Enterprise Pricing and Plans | Microsoft 365.
    2. Choose a plan and start a free trial:   Select any available plan (e.g., E3 or E5).   Click the “Try for free” or “Start free trial” button to begin the setup process.

This step is essential to create a new, temporary Microsoft 365 environment that allows you to contact Microsoft support.

    1. Follow the guided setup:   Complete the steps to create a new Microsoft account and a new tenant. This tenant will be completely separate from your locked one.
    2. Access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center:   Go to https://admin.microsoft.com/
    3. Go to Support:   In the left-hand menu, select “Support” → “Help & support.”
    4. Raise a support ticket:
      1. Describe your issue in detail.
      2. Clearly state that you are locked out of a different Microsoft 365 tenant where you are the administrator.
      3. Provide the following information:
        1. The admin email address of the locked tenant
        2. The domain name of the locked tenant
        3. Any error messages you are receiving
        4. Details about the authentication issues
        5. Confirmation that you are the administrator of the locked tenant
        6. Submit your request:   Follow the prompts to submit your support ticket. You will receive a ticket number for tracking.

    Important Notes:

    • The new trial tenant does not give you access to any data or settings from your original tenant. It is only a temporary way to contact Microsoft support.
    • Microsoft may ask you to verify your identity and admin rights for the locked tenant.
    • Resolution time may be longer since you are contacting support from a different tenant.
    • Don’t forget to cancel the trial subscription once your issue is resolved to avoid any charges. You can do this in the Admin Center under “Billing” → “Your products.”

If you have any updates regarding the issue, feel free to share them with me.
