An account that's not mine is admin on my laptop

I am a student using a school-issued laptop. I have my own school Microsoft account which has been the administrator account of the laptop for at least 2 years. Just recently I have discovered that, for some reason, my dad's Microsoft account is now the administrator and main account, and my school account is no longer recognised? My account still exists, because I've used it just now to sign into Microsoft support to ask this question, but I have no access to anything on my laptop anymore. I cannot access OneDrive, none of my passwords work on schooling sites like Moodle, and I cannot change accounts or take his account off because he's the administrator.

I've asked my dad, and he's said he hasn't done anything, and I don't recall signing into his account on my laptop. Only thing I've signed into on his account is Outlook as a second account, and the XBox website. I have no idea why he would be administrator.

Please help!!!!!

    Hi TONKIN Flynn,

I'm Hendrix, here to help with your query on the Microsoft Q&A forums.

Apologies for any inconvenience you are experiencing. I am happy to help you today.

If you cannot log in with any admin account and need to restore admin privileges, try the steps below:

1 - Boot into Windows Recovery Environment

    • Restart your PC.
    • While it’s restarting, hold the Shift key and click Restart from the login screen or Start menu.
    • This opens the Advanced Startup Options menu.

2 - Navigate to Command Prompt

    • In the menu, go to: Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Command Prompt.
    • Your PC will restart and ask you to choose an account to continue. Select your account and enter the password.

    3 - Enable Built-in Administrator Account

    • In the Command Prompt window, type:
        net user administrator /active:yes

    • Press Enter. You should see the command completed successfully.

4 - Restart and Log In

    • Close Command Prompt and restart your PC.
    • On the login screen, you’ll now see an account named Administrator.
    • Log in to this account (it has no password by default).

5 - Fix Your Account Permissions

    Once logged in as Administrator:

    • Open Settings → Accounts → Family & other users.
    • Select your main account → Change account type → Administrator.
    • Apply changes.

You can swap from one online account to another via Settings > Account but I just want to make sure of a few things first.

Do you see your account on the sign-in screen or do you need to use your Dad's account to sign-in?

If you do and you go to Settings > Accounts do you see your account listed anywhere?

To swap from one online account to another go to Settings > Accounts and if you see your Dad's account under Your info select Sign in with a local account instead.

If you have never used a local account the process will prompt to setup a new local account.

Follow the onscreen instructions and once complete sign out the online account.

Sign-in using the local account. Return to Settings > Accounts and under Your info it will show Sign in with an online account instead select this and use your school account.

After the process is complete sign out and you should see your school account on the sign-in screen instead of your Dad's account.

Select your account, sign-in and see if normal service is resumed.

    Hello,

If your computer is issued by school and managed by school, you need to reach out to your school IT. No one here can bypass your school IT to give you any modification recommendation.
