I've read then instructions to restore a backup but the instructions state to go to Recovery services vault, select the backup items then click on the "restore' button at the top. However there is no restore button at the top..
Our VM had to be reverted back to a previous state and we lost a lot of files.
There's a section of called essentials, and it shows the back up. And it shows 155 recovery points, but nothing to click on to actually use them. From all the instructions I read at the top, where it says backup, after you click on that there's supposed to a file restore button, but there is not
Okay, if you navigate to the recovery service vault, Overview, then on right under Essentials click Backup tab. Where are you going from there to see these 155 recovery points? Under Backup items, Azure Virtual Machine -- <your VM> -- view details ? Post screenshot if you can.

To recover data you would open Microsoft Azure Backup on your server, click Action -- Recover Data.
Before you restore, what is it exactly you need to restore? Is this just one program's data/files, or something else?
I understand I need to use Azure Backup. The issue is there is no button to restore files.

On your server (not on portal), look for an icon on the desktop named Microsoft Azure Backup and double-click it. If it's not on desktop, look in start menu.
Once you have it open you would click Action -- Recover Data
Before you recover data make sure you take a checkpoint/snapshot of the server as it exists now. Reason is, there may be some files on your server right now that are not included in the backup that you need. This is just in case you overwrite something important when you start copying files from the backup to your server.
I very much appreciate your help. I'm not at a point where I can access the server right now. I'll try to do it tonight. If not tomorrow.

That screenshot is of the portal. What do you see when you open Microsoft Azure Backup on your server?
It should look like the screenshots I posted above, where you open program, then click Action -- Recover Data, wizard opens, it asks for which region (select Primary), Recovery mode (Files and folders), volume (select C: or D: or whatever is appropriate), and then you click Mount button.
None of the above happens in the Azure portal.

There are different types of Azure Backups. Your backup is Microsoft Azure Recovery Services (MARS) agent backup.
You don't access it via web browser. It's a program that is installed locally on the server/vm. The latest version automatically puts shortcut icon on desktop named "Microsoft Azure Backup". I posted screenshot above of what the icon looks like.
If you already looked on the desktop, start menu, etc., for Microsoft Azure Backup and you are unable to find it, please let me know. You didn't describe what happened to your server to get to this point of needing to restore, so I don't know if I should expect MARS agent to be missing or not.
It is possible the MARS agent is no longer on your server, so that means it will need to be re-installed in order to recover data from backup.
I'm thinking you need some help to get things back. When will you be able to work on this next?

Good morning:
What happened to the VM was that after the host server did a major update, the VM's disks could not be found, so I had to use a checkpoint to get it back up.
I've checked the Host and VM, and they both have an option for Microsoft Azure Services, but they do not open Backup.

To restore the VM you would navigate to the VM in the portal, on left click Backup + disaster recovery -- Backup, click Restore VM at the top, select restore point, select restore options, click Restore.
Please note the above assumes you had your VM configured for automatic backup to Recovery Services vault.

Okay, two different ways you can restore specific files.
1. First way is to do what I suggested above and restore entire VM to a new VM. Once restored, connect to the VM, copy the files you need to your local PC, then copy them wherever you need them.
The above generally works well for small quantity/total volume of files, especially if you are already familiar with connecting via RDP/ssh, copy/pasting files, etc. For larger number of files and/or large amount of data, you would attach new data disk to the new VM, copy files to it, detach, attach it to destination VM, copy files to destination local drive.
When you are finished restoring you can delete the new temporary VM as well as the extra data disk (if you needed one) used for transferring large files between VMs.
2. Second way is to use File Recovery. In this technique you would navigate to the VM in the portal, on left click Backup + disaster recovery -- Backup, click File Recovery at the top, select restore point, download exe/script, and then run script on local PC.
It will mount a drive on your local PC so you can browse the files included in the backup and copy them off as needed.
This works okay if you have fast Internet connection to Azure and only need to restore relatively small number of files with total storage up to several gigabytes. Exactly how many files and amount stored that will be acceptable will depend on your connection and needs.
The process to set things up can be a little confusing and it may have issues functioning properly, but usually you can work through them. Below article details the steps you need to follow:

The software I use to access the remote server is not letting me in. I will have to go there in the morning.

If you don't have your VM set to back up, have you taken any kind of backup of it? For example, snapshot of the OS disk?
In regards to your screenshot, those are your recovery service vaults. If you click on each, then on left click on Protected items -- Backup items. Next on right side click on Azure Virtual Machine. Do you see your VM in the list?
Since you have two RSVs go ahead and check both.

On the left side there is no VM, because I didn't back up the entire machine and I don't have an option for file recovery. Are you available for a phone call?
