Are sub and superscripts in PowerPoint supposed to work the same way as Word?

I use ctrl shft + or - to engage and disengage subscripts and superscripts in Word.
Sometimes they work in Powerpoint, sometimes I can create a superscript but I can't turn it off, even with the font menu. Sometimes adding a space activates the turn-off.
I tried rebooting, but it didn't correct the problem.
