In Automation account DSC node status is Unresponsive.

We have been using DSC to enforce our VM's configuration integrity for a year or so but we come across a situation that the VM will show a DSC node status of "Unresponsive" after being compliant for some time. I understand in the case of the VM is being turned off, the same "Unresponsive" status will be shown but in our case, the VM is running and seems to be fine. From what I can gather from the event log, it looks like there is a DSc Timer task which wakes up periodically and run the consistency check but somehow after running for a period of time, it simply stops. No more messages are being logged. The last message seen usually is "The local configuration manager was shut down". I have tried to unregister the DSC node and re-assign DSC configuration but it usually does not work. I have been taking a more drastic (a sure way) action by uninstalling the DSC extension at the VM and re-assign the DSC configuration.

What is the root cause the VM stops sending DSC status back to the portal?

Any suggestion what additional troubleshooting steps I can take to understand this?

What is the proper way to resolve this situation?
