Upgraded to win 11 pro from win 11 home and it wont stay activated

I upgraded from Win 11 home to Win 11. The upgrade locked up during the upgrade process and after an hour I had to shut it down. I did several updates and I finally got an upgrade but it upgraded to Windows Enterprise.

Now it says it can't validate. I hit the troubleshooter and it activates or says the server is offline. I eventually get some work done but every time I go offline, it comes back with the can't validate this copy of Windows. This keeps occurring until I reconnect to the internet.

This is not acceptable as a lot of the work I do is on closed private networks and not on the internet.

Further more, When I look up "About" on the operating system it says that I have something called Windows Enterprise.

Anyone have any advice or a way to actually contact Microsoft?

    Hi John York,

I'm Hendrix, here to help with your query on the Microsoft Q&A forums.

Apologies for any inconvenience you are experiencing. I am happy to help you today.

Here is how to fix the issue step-by-step:

1 - Disconnect from the internet.

2 - Change the product key to the Windows 11 Pro generic key:

    VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

3 - Restart the device. This should downgrade Enterprise to Pro.

4 - Reconnect to the internet and let Windows activate using your purchased license.

    Hey there,

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the activation issue:

    1. Check Activation Status:

    • Go to Settings > System > Activation and check if it shows that Windows is activated. It should display a message like "Windows is activated with a digital license."

    2. Run the Activation Troubleshooter

    • You mentioned running the troubleshooter. If it suggests that the server is offline, this could be due to the device not being able to contact Microsoft's servers. Ensure that your device is online when you run the troubleshooter.

    3. Verify Windows Enterprise Subscription

    • Ensure that your Windows 11 Enterprise subscription is active. If it shows that the subscription isn't valid, you may need to check with your organization's admin or the support team to resolve this.

    4. Using slmgr Command

    • Open Command Prompt and run:

    slmgr /dlv

    • This will show detailed licensing information, including what edition of Windows is installed and its activation status.

    5. Connectivity Issues

    • Since you noted that it works when connected to the internet, consider adjusting your network settings or VPN to ensure it can reach the activation servers whenever you go online.

    6. Re-enter the Product Key

    • If applicable, re-enter your product key by going to the activation settings and selecting "Change product key."

I hope this helps you get your Windows activation sorted out! Let me know if you need more assistance.

    Best regards.

Hi, thank you for reaching out. I’m happy to help.

In addition to Brian Huynh’s answer, did you mean upgrading from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro?

If yes, how did you obtain your Windows Pro license? Was it from the Microsoft Store or a third party?

If you bought the Windows 11 pro license from MS store. Please follow the steps below:

    Disconnect from the internet

Go to Settings > System > Activation. Click "Change product key," enter "VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T," and hit activate.

Reconnect to the internet, then log in to your Microsoft account used for the purchase.

    Restart your computer and check.
