Hello

I’m experiencing an issue that I’ve seen mentioned in several forums and threads, but I haven’t found a clear solution.

I recently formatted both my SSD and HDD. I tried installing Windows 11, but during setup it freezes around 10% of the installation process.

I went back to Windows 10, and I was able to install it by unplugging the Ethernet cable. Normally, Windows 10 freezes or reboots within a few minutes after startup, but by skipping the online registration step I was able to reach the desktop.

However, once inside Windows 10, the system still freezes or reboots after about 4 minutes of use.

My hardware specs:

  • 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz (HyperX Fury)
  • Ryzen 7 5700G
  • GeForce RTX 3070 (Gigabyte)
  • Corsair CX750 PSU
  • Initially: Gigabyte A520M-DS3H motherboard
  • Replaced with: ASUS Prime B550M-A AC (same issue occurs)

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Unplugged the GPU (currently running without it)
  • Changed RAM slots
  • Tested with different RAM sticks borrowed from a friend
  • Changed motherboard
  • Disabled internet during installation
  • Reinstalled GPU, chipset, and processor drivers
  • Tried disabling different drivers in Safe Mode

My next step is to test with an older PSU I used before installing the GPU, in case this is a power delivery issue.

For reference, I can boot Windows in Safe Mode with networking and it works without freezing. On the other hand, I was able to install Ubuntu, and it works perfectly in normal mode. I also ran several stress tests there and the system remained stable.

If you are able to boot into Safe Mode and Windows is stable in Safe Mode, that usually indicates a corrupt driver or hardware issue, but the problems you describe regarding re-installing Windows may also indicate a hardware fault.

Have you tried recreating the bootable USB you are using on a different USB flash drive with the official Media Creation Tool to ensure the USB you are using is not corrupt?

Because the problem has existed across many different Windows installations, I suspect a hardware issue, try simplifying your build before installing Windows, remove all drives except the target drive, if you have more than one stick of RAM remove them all except one, you have integrated graphics on your processor, remove the graphics card for the installation.

The freezing around 10% of the installation process usually does not indicate a software problem, it cannot be drivers, it indicates hardware, if you have other drives, have you tried to install Windows onto one of those drives.
