The thumnail on my taskbar when Teams is open has a red dot with a number in it that is the most distracting thing ever. For email I was able to turn this off, but can't figure out how to do it for teams. Any help?

    Hi @Greg Martin

Thanks for reaching out to Q&A Forum.

Regarding your question about how to turn off the red dot with a number that appears on the Microsoft Teams thumbnail in your taskbar, you can disable by trying one of 4 options below:

Option 1: Turn Off Badge Notifications via Windows Settings

This method disables badge notifications for Teams at the OS level:

    1. Open Settings on your Windows device.
    2. Go to Personalization > Taskbar.
    3. Scroll down and find Show badges on taskbar apps.
    4. Toggle this off.

Option 2: Customize Notifications in Teams

You can also reduce or eliminate notifications directly in Teams:

    1. Open Microsoft Teams.
    2. Click your profile picture > Settings > Notifications.

    1. Adjust or disable notifications for Mentions, Messages, and Other categories.  User's image

This won’t remove the badge entirely but can reduce the number of alerts that trigger it.

    Option 3: Use Focus Assist

Windows Focus Assist can suppress notifications during specific times:

    1. Open Settings > System > Focus Assist.
    2. Choose Priority only or Alarms only.
    3. Set automatic rules for when Focus Assist turns on.  User's image

This helps prevent the badge from appearing during work or focus hours.

    Option 4: Registry Editor (Advanced)

If you're comfortable editing the registry:

    1. Open Registry Editor (regedit).
    2. Navigate to:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
    3. Find the key ForegroundFlashCount and set its value to 0.

This disables flashing taskbar icons, which may help with the red dot behavior.
Should the issue persist after you try these options, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
