No longer receiving notification for replies in Teams threads

At some point in the last couple weeks, people in my organization are no longer receiving notifications when other user reply in threads. This includes threads they are tagged and threads in which they have already commented. This means we are missing tons of communication and unless we manually go back to check the thread every few minutes we have no way of knowing if someone replied unless they tagged us directly. I have tested this in numerous Teams channels and confirmed that all of my notification settings both for the app and for those specific channels are set so that I should be receiving replies.

If I click the settings for a channel I have 2 options, , if I check the box that says include thread replies I get notifications, but I get them for every reply in that channel including replies to thread I did not comment in. If I toggle the follow new thread options, I still don’t get notifications for threads where I commented and was tagged in. Why am I and others no longer receiving notifications for replies on threads we should be?

    Hi @Jonathan Jordan,

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum and sharing the details of your issue.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience. I understand how critical timely notifications are for staying connected and productive, and I sincerely apologize for the confusion and disruption this change has caused.

Regarding your concerns, please verify whether all affected users are operating on the same operating system and Teams client version (accessible via Settings → About → Version) to determine if the issue is platform-specific (web/application).

Besides, Microsoft currently introduced a new Threads experience in Teams. This update changed how notifications work for channel conversations:

    User's image

The previous behavior was replaced to give users more control and reduce noise, but we understand this may feel unexpected.

Therefore, to ensure you receive alerts for threads you participate in, please follow these steps:

    1. Please recheck to ensure you enabled Auto-Follow for Threads
      • In Teams, go to Settings > Notifications and activity (or Chats and channels).
      • Under Followed threads, turn on:
      • Threads you start
      • Threads you reply to
      • Threads where you’re @mentioned
    2. Configure setting notifications for followed threads
    • In the same menu, find Replies to followed threads and posts.
    • Ensure that Replies, Mentions, and Activity are all set to Banner and feed rather than Off.
    1. You also need to manually follow important threads
    • In any channel, click More options (···) on a message and select Follow thread.
    • You also can follow all content in a specific channel, select More channel options , and turn on the toggle next to Follow all.

These steps will restore the expected behavior without overwhelming you with notifications from unrelated conversations. Kindly refer the official document from Microsoft for detail information: Follow threads in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Support and Manage channel notifications in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Support

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we adapt to these updates. We’re here to ensure your Teams experience remains smooth and effective.

Should you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to reach out.

I can verify that the issue is happening across Windows 10 and 11 devices and different versions of Teams. One of my coworkers does not yet have the ability to follow thread or see follow threads. I have the option to view followed threads but the notifications still do not alert me when someone replies unless I am tagged.

If I go to settings>notifications this is the only option I have for followed threads and it isn't turned onUser's image

I checked for Teams updates and I don't have any for the app I am able to install, My version is 25198.1112.3855.2900. I don't think notifications from threads I have already commented in would be overwhelming, I need them to know when people are responding to me.

I am also experiencing this issue on Teams Version 25212.2204.3869.2204 on Windows 10.

I have changed my channel notification settings to get all new posts and to include replies (Three dots next to channel name > Channel notifications > Check "Include replies"), and that allows me to get notifications for all threads, but I am unable to mute individual threads. I will turn off the notifications for a specific thread, but the notifications still come through (In channel displaying all threads > Click three dots for individual thread > Click Turn off notifications).
