Can not drag and drop files or messages from new outlook to teams

In classic Outlook you can drag and drop a file directly into Teams and Webapplications. This is currently not possible in New Outlook. At current time our users have to drag and drop or detach to OneDrive or another place using File Explorer and then upload to the Teams or Web application. The fact that this BASIC functionality is still missing keeps us (and a lot of other people in different organizations) from using the new outlook. People work a lot with files,  messages and attachments in Outlook. Certainly with external people. All those times one should be able to just drag and drop (fastly) an e-mail (or the attachment) to a specific channel in a team, without always having to "post" a message about it (this is what the button "share to teams" does and it takes a  lot more time). Please bring (back) this functionality to the new outlook experience. Only that will get us to start using the new outlook!

    Hello @Ronald Jacobs

Thank you for your detailed response.

The Share to Teams button that is greyed out might be a COM add-ins from Classic Outlook and not fully supported in New Outlook yet. However, New Outlook does have the Share to Teams which is a Web Add-in. You can easily find this feature in New Outlook/Outlook Web:

    • After opening your New Outlook/Outlook web > go to the Home tab
    • Choose More Apps (windows like button) > Select Share to Teams

    Note:

    • If your Outlook hasn't had this feature, click Add app (+) and add this feature to your Outlook. User's image
    • You can Pin this feature to your home tab by clicking the right mouse on the app > choose Pin.

Regarding the drag-and-drop functionality in New Outlook, there is potential for improvement in the future. The product team has recently updated the status of this feature request to "We are considering this", which is a positive sign. You can support this initiative by upvoting the feedback and sharing your input here: Not able to drag and drop files · Community. Or you can create another feedback of your own in this Community.

Please note that Q&A forum moderators do not have access to backend systems or the ability to change app behavior directly. Our role is to assist based on available documentation and guidance from Microsoft based on our knowledge. We genuinely appreciate your feedback and share your goal of making New Outlook better and more user-friendly.

Thank you so much for reaching out to us and we appreciate your cooperation!

    Hello @Ronald Jacobs

Thank you for posting your valuable question on Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how inconvenient this limitation is. Unfortunately, Drag-and-drop emails or attachments from New Outlook directly into Microsoft Teams (chat or channel), SharePoint or OneDrive via browser and Other web-based drop zones is currently not supported.

    However, you can still:

    • Drag-and-drop to desktop or File Explorer
    • Drag attachments between emails within New Outlook
    • Use “Share to Teams” button (slower, creates a post)

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue, and the drag-and-drop feature is being considered to be updated. However, no specific release date has been provided yet. You can check Microsoft 365 Road Map for information about updated features in the future.

Microsoft appreciate your idea and want to hear their customers' voice. I encourage you to submit feedback and upvote existing feature requests to show demand from the community at Outlook · Community. The Product Team is in-charge of the feedback site, and they are constantly checking the comments and feedback from our customer. Many features have been developed or improved based on users' comment.

You can also give feedback to Microsoft Product from Within the New Outlook App:

    • Open your New Outlook > go to Help tab > choose Feedback. User's image
    • Select the Team to receive your feedback and Choose Give a compliment/Report a problem.

    • Fill in the form and submit your feedback.

In the meantime, you can still use Classic Outlook for Windows. It is still recommended if drag-and-drop is essential. Microsoft has confirmed Classic Outlook will be supported until at least 2029 : Outlook Classic Support Until At Least 2029 | Microsoft Community Hub. Or if you have any other alternative ways for this problem, please feel free to share by replying to this thread, we would love to learn more from the customers' side.

New Outlook is still evolving, and several features, including drag-and-drop, are actively being considered for future updates. We encourage you to submit feedback to help Microsoft prioritize this functionality. Your input not only highlights the importance of this feature but also supports other users experiencing the same challenge. I will also forward your feedback to the appropriate team for further consideration.

Thank you for your effort and understanding, it truly makes a difference!
