Experiencing difficulties adding a new ASUS PC to a Microsoft account. Currently, there are no devices connected, and the account allows for up to 10 devices. The PC is brand new and not linked to any other Microsoft account.
Each attempt to add the device results in the error message: "the serial number is not recognized."
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Adding devices to an account is primarily intended for Microsoft devices, such as Surface.
Are you trying to install some version of Microsoft Office? For that, you do not need to add the device first. Install Office from your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services .

I already installed office on my PC, I would like though to register my device on the microsoft account to be able to use "localize my device" for example. Because my previous PC which was a Samsung, was previously registered I thought that devices other than Microsoft could be registered and linked to the account, by choosing "other" when asked what type of device should be connected. Is it still possible to add a non-Microsoft device to one's account and if yes, how?
No, you can't add non-Microsoft devices. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/manage-devices-used-with-your-microsoft-account-d4044995-81db-b24b-757e-1102d148f441#id0edbl=ios . The specific link goes to iOS devices, but you'll see infor regarding other devices on the same page (different tabs).

Thank you Stefan. I visited the link you provided and cannot see under the "Window" tab that only Microsoft devices can be linked. In addition, it mentions that Windows 10/11 will automatically be added. I am currently using Windows 11 and my device was not added to my account although I sign in Microsoft on this very device every day.
What I find quite strange and maybe that is concomittent problemis that on Windows Defender, on this device, all is running fine except that Windows defender mentions that I am not signed in. If I would like to sign in from Windows Defender, the system returns an error message.Does it give an additional hint?
Sorry, I meant to say that you can't manually add a non-Microsoft PC.
A PC may be added as you install Office on that device and sign in. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that this will be more reliable with subscriptions than with perpetual licenses.
OK got it! Indeed, only Surface devices can be added manually! Thanks a lot, that clarifies the issue.
Then how comes that my Windows 11 Asus PC was not automatically added when I installed Microsoft on that device? Did I miss one step? Is there a way to fix it?
