Office Script Buttons not Responding

After a recent Microsoft Excel for Online update, buttons for my office scripts have stopped working. when I click them, a banner comes up saying that it is being initialized. They work fine when ran from the automation tab or code editor. I want to know if there is a solution or if they have intentionally removed support for buttons. I have a dashboard that runs using these and need to know if I have to retrain my operators to use the automation tab instead.

    Hi @Jamie Hubble,
Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A!

About your situation, Microsoft has not announced the removal of Office Script buttons in Excel for the web. Our current documentation still shows buttons as a supported feature and explains how to add/remove them. (Office Scripts in Excel - Office Scripts | Microsoft Learn)

But what you’re seeing (buttons stuck on “Initializing/Setting up to run”) matches a recently reported issue affecting some tenants after recent Excel for the web updates. In those reports, scripts still run from the Automate tab or the Code Editor, just like in your case.

So, you do not need to retrain operators permanently. For now, use the Automate tab/Code Editor or the suggestion workaround below:

    1. Run from the Automate tab / Code Editor This is fully supported and documented as the primary way to run scripts in Excel for the web. For more details: Introduction to Office Scripts in Excel - Microsoft Support
    2. Provide a “one‑click” alternative with Power Automate If your operators need a button-like experience, create an Instant cloud flow that calls your script via Excel Online (Business) → Run script (or Run script from SharePoint library). You can pin or share that flow to give them a simple trigger.

And with the Microsoft Power Automate flow, to ensure that you get professional help and avoid incorrect information from our side, we suggest you post on the Microsoft Power Automate Community for expert assistance. This is a specific channel related to Power Automate. The reason I ask you to post a new topic is that in the Answers forum, we have limited resources and very little knowledge about Power Automate, and in Microsoft Power Platform Community Forum Thread, you'll get the most qualified group of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can share their knowledge or learn from your interaction.
User's image In the meantime, you can also provide some more information about the issue you are experiencing. This will help us better visualize the issue and provide more accurate guidance. For example:

    • Can you provide more information about the version/build number you are using?
    • Are you having the issue in Excel on the web or the app or both?
    • Are other colleagues in your organization/company experiencing the same issue?
    • Can you provide a screenshot of what you see in the pane?

Please note that our initial response may not resolve the issue immediately. However, with your collaboration and more detailed information, we can work together to identify the best solution.

Looking forward to your response so we can assist you further.

    Best regards.
