Purchasing Domains & SSL Certs via Azure

If I buy a domain via Azure App Service Domains & certificate via Azure App Service certificates, can we use it with Azure Application Gateway as well? Or is it restricted to App Services alone?

My architecture some what looks like Traffic manager-> Application Gateway -> APIM -> App Service

Yes, you can use a domain purchased via Azure App Service Domains and a certificate from Azure App Service Certificates with Azure Application Gateway

Domain is not restricted to App Services, you can use it across Azure services, including Application Gateway, APIM, and Traffic Manager.

Certificate Usage: Purchasing your SSL certificate via Azure App Service Certificates, it can be exported to Azure Key Vault . The Application Gateway allows you to fetch certificates stored in Azure Key Vault & enabling you to use that SSL certificate for your Application Gateway.

Exporting SSL Certificate: Ensure SSL certificate is in Azure Key Vault, post it can be imported to your Application Gateway.

Bindings: Ensure that the Application Gateway is correctly configured to use the certificate for HTTPS traffic to and from your backend services (App Service, in this case).

Hi Amal,

I strongly recommend against purchasing App Service Domain due to all the problems. Instead please purchase the domain directly from a domain registrar. That way you will have full functionality and can use the domain with all of the various Azure services that support custom domains.

In regards to App Service Certificate, yes, you can use it with different Azure services, not just App Services. When I need purchased certificate (as opposed to free certificate) I prefer to purchase from third party since cost is much lower and support is better/easier to obtain, however, App Service Certificate will work fine.

Please note I'm a proponent of Azure services in general, it is just I can no longer recommend people use App Service Domains if they can help it.
