Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.
And congrats on your new Windows 11 laptop, ChristopherCarter!
Yes, MP4 is more widely supported across Windows apps and devices. For maximum compatibility and ease-of-use on Windows, converting your MOV files to MP4 is an excellent solution. However, it's not the only option:
1 - Get a better media player instead of using the built-in one
The default Media Player app in Windows lacks the specific codecs needed for the Apple-proprietary video and audio inside the MOV container. So you can totally install a free, lightweight media player that can play almost anything, including MOV files. The replies above already suggested some, so I won't repeat them - except to note that VLC is the top recommendation, because it also supports conversion between file types!
2 - Convert MOV to MP4 online:
Beside downloading an application, you can consider using a free online converter if your files are small or not too many of them. But beware of privacy risks and there's usually a file size limit, the speed is also slow for large videos.
3 - Check your iPhone's default recording format:
- On your iPhone > Settings > Camera > Formats
- The Most Compatible setting usually creates MP4 files (H.264 video)
- You can check the manufacturer's website to see if your phone can be set to that.
