Hi,

since a month after an update a connection of an excel sheet will be lost every time after using the sheet. The icon of the sheet will be grayed. Every time I have to activated the connection to the start screen new. Earlier this works very fine.

The Excel sheet is hosted on One Drive. When I go to the Open Screen there is a message:

You must register for at least one account.

Which one? - I am already connected with my account to Excel.

I don't understand this behavior, because before the update of the Excel App it worked fine for many years.

Please have someone a hint for me. TIA

Hi! Charly. I'm here to help.

Thanks for the detailed description, pinned shortcuts (“Add to Home Screen”) often break because the app loses its token/session link to your Microsoft account, even though you’re signed in. That’s why you see the “You must register for at least one account” message, even though you are already connected.

    You can stabilize it by:

Clear App Cache (but not data yet)

Go to Android Settings → Apps → Excel → Storage & Cache.

    Tap Clear Cache.

Restart the app and check if pinned shortcuts keep the connection.

Then, Remove and Re-add the Account

In Excel/Office app, sign out of your Microsoft account completely.

    Restart the device.

Sign back in → re-pin the sheet to Home Screen.

    Additionally, check Excel App Version

Go to Google Play Store → Microsoft Excel.

Update to the latest version, since Microsoft is rolling out fixes for shortcut/account persistence.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly

    Hello Charly Fesenbeckh,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for your post. I understand that you are having issue with Excel on Android 15 where pinned OneDrive Excel files become disconnected and grayed out. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you go through this situation.

    Thanks for your detailed description:

    • Pinned Excel files on the Android home screen are becoming unavailable or grayed out after use.
    • Excel shows messages like “You must register for at least one account” or “One or more accounts require you to sign back in”, even though you're already signed in.

The issue seems to stem from authentication token problems, cache corruption, or sync conflicts between Excel and OneDrive. Therefore, there are few steps i suggest you could try:

    1. Clear Cache (Not Data)
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Excel > Storage > Clear Cache
    • Do the same for OneDrive
    • Then reboot your phone
    1. Recreate Shortcuts via OneDrive

Instead of using Excel’s “Pin to Start”:

    • Open the OneDrive app
    • Navigate to the Excel file
    • Tap the ⋮ (three dots) next to the file
    • Select “Add to Home Screen”

This method bypasses Excel’s shortcut system and is more stable.

    1. Sign Out and Back In
    • Open Excel, tap your profile icon, and sign out
    • Also remove the Microsoft account from Settings > Accounts
    • Restart your phone
    • Sign back in via the Microsoft Office app, not just Excel

This refreshes your authentication token and may resolve the “register account” error.

    1. Check Permissions

Ensure Excel and OneDrive have full permissions:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Excel/OneDrive > Permissions
    • Enable access to Storage, Network, and Accounts

I am looking forward for your respond. Please feel free to let me know if the suggestion helped. Thank you so much for your times.

    Best Regard,
