There are a few options in Microsoft Word depending on your goal:
- Password protection (to open the file)
- Go to File → Info → Protect Document → Encrypt with Password
- Enter a password. Now no one can open the document without it.
- Restrict editing (people can open but not change content)
- Go to File → Info → Protect Document → Restrict Editing
- Choose options like "Read-only" or allow only tracked changes/comments.
- Set a password so only you can remove restrictions.
- Mark as final (lighter protection, discourages editing)
- Go to File → Info → Protect Document → Mark as Final.
- This makes the doc read-only, but anyone can remove it.
- Digital signature (authenticity protection)
- Go to File → Info → Protect Document → Add a Digital Signature
- Requires a certificate, useful if sharing formally.
Since your document is very large (2000 pages), encryption/password protection will make the file size bigger and slightly slower to open. But Word handles it fine.
