Overview
MS Gothic is a typeface designed for typesetting the Japanese language in the Japanese script. It has a sans serif, “gothic” style with strokes of uniform thickness and simple, plain, straightforward character shapes. It was designed to be legible onscreen, in user interfaces on low-resolution displays. It is appropriate for headings and subheads.
MS Gothic was designed by Ricoh Co. Ltd. and licensed as the default system font for Windows 3.1. It has only one weight, with no accompanying italic style. The font includes Japanese kanji, hiragana, katakana, symbols, and capitals and lowercase letters for the Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets. The Latin letters in MS Gothic are of uniform width (monospaced). MS PGothic has the same Japanese characters, but with proportional spacing, and the Latin alphabet is a different design that also has proportional spacing (the widths of the letters varies depending on their shape). The default glyph shapes of this MS UI Gothic are based on JIS2004. This font also provides access to a set of JIS90 legacy glyphs via 'jp90' OpenType layout table.
