Surface Book 3 VMware Issues

I'm trying to get VMware working on the laptop (i7, 32gb, 1tb). I never installed HyperV but keep getting errors about it causing problems blocking the VMs running. I decided to try it but it wasn't acceptable as I need USB passthrough for a particular job (programming from WinXP).

I've scoured the net tried all the uninstalls, powershell scripts, etc and nothing works. MSinfo32 shows a hypervisor running when NEITHER HyperV or VMware are installed so I'm stuffed if I know where this hypervisor is coming from.

There is nothing about virtual sharing etc in the bios/cmos of the SB3 to enable/disable like there is on a normal system.

I also tried virtualbox but it refused to even create VMs iirc.

Any ideas on how do fix this would be appreciated because it's getting REALLY annoying. I didn't have the issue on my SurfaceBook2 IIRC and definitely didn't have it on my Toshiba laptop and it runs sweet on my desktop (which claims it does have Hyper-V installed but neither HV or Sandbox are ticked in features).

Someone else found it a couple of days ago sorry .. in Windows Security/Device Security/Core Isolation/Memory Integrity and turn that off.

For some reason in my case I couldn't turn this off and had to go through some cmd prompt commands and gpedit and I think there was a regedit too.

So mine is working now but there is a serious issue there.

    Hi Tsunami_Australia,

Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community. We're sorry for the delayed response.

I have questions to ask so we can check as to how we can further troubleshoot this kind of issue:

    • Can you tell us the error message or the error code when you get to encounter the issue while trying to run VMware?

    • Have you checked if the Hyper-V feature in your Surface Book 3 is being enabled?

    • If it is being enabled on your Surface Book 2, will you be able to give us a screenshot as to where you can enable this feature in both devices?

If Hyper-V is blocking VMware, you can visit this link>> https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/hyper-v-on-windows/quick-start/enable-hyper-v#enable-the-hyper-v-role-through-settings to check the current status of Hyper-V and you can try to enable/disable it and see if this helps.

    Kind Regards,

    Crest

    Hi ... error code

    ...

VMware Workstation and Device/Credential Guard are not compatible. VMware Workstation can be run after disabling Device/Credential Guard. Please visit <site that has sfa info on it> for more details.

    ...

When this first started I had "NOT" installed Hyper-V and double checked such. I later installed Hyper-V hoping to just roll with it for my VM needs but then found out it's that pitiful for workstations that it won't support USB passthrough (I get it's place in servers but has no place in workstations without this feature) which renders it useless to my needs. Uninstalled it, sandbox etc etc and issue remains.

We just tested the Surface Book 2 and it no longer works either but it used to. So something has changed in updates or whatever it would seem. So BOTH Surface Books even after fresh restart/reformat are refusing to play nice with it now but the desktop fully updated doesn't give 2 hoots so it is something to do with SB's since the software is the same across the laptops and the desktop.

    Hi Tsunami_Australia,

Thank you for sharing that it's working good now.

Well, this may differ as to how you can rectify the issue and that's based on the Windows version of a device and depends to the VMware patch you downloaded. You can check this 3rd party link>> https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2146361 if you happen to encounter issues while running VMware again.

    Kind Regards,

    Crest
