“Battery Limit” removed from UEFI, but now only charges up to 50%

“Battery Limit” mode has been removed from the UEFI on my Surface Pro (11th edition) and it still only charges up to 50 %. It seems last week there was an update (firmware update?) and the system still seems to be enforcing the 50 % limit automatically based on firmware behavior—even without a visible toggle.

I downloaded the firmeware, but this did not help: Download Surface Pro 11th Edition Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center

Can anyone help?

Philippe

    Updated 8/21/2025

Thank you for reporting this issue. The August 7 update resulted in the removal of the Battery Limit setting from the UEFI settings on Surface Laptop (7th Edition) and Surface Pro (11th Edition) ARM-based devices. We are testing a software update that will be released as soon as it passes our quality testing. When the update is released, it will be made available through Windows Update. Please monitor this post for updates and check Surface Pro (11th Edition) update history or Surface Laptop (7th Edition) update history for future updates.

More information: The Battery Limit feature is a Surface firmware setting (similar to BIOS). When enabled, the battery stops charging when it reaches 50% of maximum charge capacity. This feature is not enabled by default and must be manually enabled by either modifying the Surface Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) or remotely changing through a Surface UEFI configuration package. This setting is recommended for some scenarios, including devices configured for point of sale, RFID, and related kiosk scenarios. Users who have not enabled the Battery Limit feature should not experience any change in charging behavior after installing the August 7 update. If users enabled the Battery Limit feature before installing the update, their devices will limit charging capacity to 50%, and this cannot be disabled to allow the devices to charge beyond 50% until a software update is released. Find more details on the Surface Battery Limit setting.

I have exactly the same issue as well, 50% uefi limit was on, now the toggle is gone and I cannot get the device to charge past 50%.

I have raised something in feedback hub:

This is a serious problem introduced by MS, and renders our laptops near un-usable on the go, which is the whole reason for getting them in the first place! MS has been very slow in fixing this, pretty unacceptable.

I have the same problem: Battery Limit mode has been removed from the UEFI, but with the Surface Laptop (7th edition). Microsoft's online support was unable to resolve the issue. The recommendation to reset the laptop did not solve the problem. I was asked to return the laptop to the service station, which I did on August 14th.. I am still waiting for a response. I will keep you informed.
